Writing

I'm a full-time writer, based in Northern California's wine country. Here's the view out of my office window. I write mainly about computers and the Internet, mostly from a Macintosh perspective. I began writing for Macworld magazine in 1987, and I was a Contributing Editor for the magazine from 1990 through 2004. For Macworld, Mac|Life (formerly MacAddict), Digital Video and the late, unlamented Mac Computing and Mac Guide magazines, I've done lots of reviews, news stories, and feature articles. Among the kinds of products that I review regularly are Web site creation tools, presentation programs, Personal Information Managers, email programs, utilities, and personal finance software.

Books

Since 1997, I've been concentrating on writing books, with my magazine work and consulting becoming a smaller part of my work load. Check the Books page for the latest releases.

Book Companion Sites

I've done several companion Web sites for books that I've written:

Essays

From time to time, I've done a few essays. I like them; I keep meaning to write more, but never seem to find the time. These days, my non-computer writing can usually be found at Backup Brain, the weblog I share with my wife, Dori Smith. Backup Brain is one of the earliest blogs; we've been publishing continuously since October 1999.

Teaching and Media Appearances

In the past few years, I've done a fair amount of teaching gigs, as well as appearing as a guest on television, radio, and in online chat sessions. Here's a list of my appearances since the beginning of 1998.

Consulting and Training

I've been a Mac consultant since 1986; though my focus is on my writing, I still do occasional consulting and training. I've also written some software manuals. Feel free to contact me if you have a consulting, training, or writing job.
